RYA Level 3 – Better Sailing (Keelboat)

On successful completion of this two-day course, you will be safety conscious and capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light to moderate conditions.

Course Content

Practical Skills

Sailing techniques

Rigging the boat according to different weather conditions and sea states
Using the sail controls according to different weather conditions and sea states
Checking the spinnaker is rigged correctly

Core Skills

Leaving and returning to a mooring or jetty
Recovering a man overboard
Using sail telltales
Tacking while sailing into the wind
Gybing while sailing downwind
Making use of crew

Sailing Background

International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)

Applying the IRPCS to:

  • Other sailing vessels
  • Power-driven vessels
  • Following or crossing narrow channels
  • Action by stand-on vessel

Other Core Skills

Basic meteorology terminology
The Beaufort Scale
Obtaining a weather forecast
Interpreting a basic synoptic chart
Awareness of changing weather conditions

We will provide the boat and all the course materials, we only ask you to bring the following:

  • Deck Shoes or non-slip white soled trainers
  • Waterproofs
  • Buoyancy Aid/Lifejacket (some are available to borrow)
  • Older set of warm clothes (no jeans or tracksuit bottoms)
  • Hat (either sun or woolly)
  • Sun Tan Lotion
  • Bottle of Water
  • Any medication you may require
